Thorpe’s creative work considers the historical representations of the female body in precedents such as Greek and Roman statuary and religious icons exploring the tension between idealized and real. The symbols of Aphrodite, Venus, and Mary are complex and contradictory. The woman is virginal but coy, maternal but sexual, chaste but pregnant.
