Clouds: A Collaboration with Fluid Dynamics

Tom Baril (American, b. 1952), Lumahai Beach (1997), Gelatin silver print, Gift of Sean Sullivan. Museum collection.

August 26-December 14, 2025

This exhibition is a collaboration with the UConn School of Engineering and Professor Georgios Matheou who recently received a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award focusing on clouds. Dr Matheou combines theory, modelling, computational algorithms, in situ-measurements and remote sensing data to understand and predict multi-physics fluid flows. In coordination with this NSF grant, the Benton will mount an exhibition of clouds in contemporary photography.

Though they are often physically far away from life on the Earth’s surface, clouds support life on the planet. We may take them for granted, but like art, we need clouds. The exhibition aims to promote engagement with the environment.

Artists on view include Kate Cordsen, Helen Glazer, Sally Gall, Sebastiao Salgado, Michael Light, and Chip Hooper.
